Historique -

Founded in 1966 at the initiative of Cardinal Léon-Etienne Duval, Archbishop of Algiers, the Diocesan Center of Studies originally trained personnel within the Church of Algeria, and prepared them for the linguistic, social, cultural and religious realities of a young, independent Algeria.

The intuition of the founders, Fathers Henri Teissier and Pierre Claverie, to establish the Centre was supported by requirements set by the Second Vatican Council, which committed the Catholic Church to be in solidarity with the human and cultural environment in which it is a part of. In particular, the Church is interested in Islam, not for the purposes of proselytism, but in order to appreciate the Muslim tradition in its spiritual and religious dimensions. It is in this spirit that the Centre of Studies has provided training in Islamic Studies since 1970, in preparation for dialogues with people of the Islamic faith.

In 1971, a method of teaching Algerian Arabic, known as the « Kamal » method, was developed by a group of religious men and women who were permanent members of the Centre for Studies in Linguistics and Didactics. This method has recently been enhanced by new audio-visual materials.

In 1973, the Diocesan Centre for Studies, already known as “Les Glycines,” acquired a tool instrumental to the furthering the knowledge and study of Algeria: a research library, bringing together the collections formed during the 19th and 20th century by the White Fathers, the Dominicans, the Jesuits, and the White Sisters. The library was enhanced by the Mandouze and Ageron Collections in 2008 and 2011, respectively. In 2014, the archives of architect Jean-Jacques Deluz, who practiced entirely in Algeria, were donated to Les Glycines. The library now has more than 90,000 records and 1,000 periodicals, 50 of which are current.

Until 2009, the Centre published the Magreb Middle East Press Review, a bi-monthly review of news, began in 1955 by the White Fathers. Originally entitled “Arabic Press Extracts”, it was a thematic synthesis of Algerian, Magrebian, and Middle Eastern news. It was deeply interested in Islamic reform in the Arab world, and in particular in the Ulémas (Islamic theologians) in Algeria, and included articles translated from the weekly newspaper El Bassaïr.

Since the founding of the Centre, lectures are regularly organized. The topics include socio-economic and cultural issues related to Algeria and the Arab world. The University for All, founded in 2016, is part of the tradition of the providing lectures at Les Glycines.
